EVENTS

First Annual Art for Action Egypt - May 2009
Canadian International School of Egypt

Kathleen and I, (pictured above) organized the first ever Art for Action event which was held at CISE, in Cairo, Egypt.  The day included:
  • an art exhibition which showcased art work from students in junior kindergarten to grade 12.
  • an art sale of items such as plants and plant pots, book marks, reusable bags, t-shirts, pins, and much more!
  • a silent auction of approximately 15 pieces of work.
  • a raffle for a basket of art supplies.
  • singing performances by some of the intermediate students.
  • a booth from the school's eco-team, encouraging recycling and selling sketch books made from recycled paper.
  • a booth set up by the 57357 Children's Cancer Hospital of Egypt (the recipient of all proceeds).
The day was a HUGE success and we were able to raise almost $4000 USD to donate to the hospital.  The presentation was made at the school's annual Spring Fling celebration and some students from our school were able to visit the hospital and see the painting that we donated hanging on the wall!  It was a GREAT start to a GREAT annual event!

First Annual Art for Action Vietnam - June 2010
Canadian International School - Ho Chi Minh City

I brought my idea from Egypt to my new school in Vietnam this year, and we held the first annual event here in Saigon.  Our school was at a temporary facility so the event couldn't be as big as we had hoped, but we went through with it and it was another GREAT day!  The day included:
  • an art exhibition which showcased art work from students in junior kindergarten to grade 9.
  • an art sale of items such as bracelets, book marks, reusable bags, pencil holders, pins, and paper mache bowls!
  • a booth set up by Education for Development (the recipient of all proceeds).
  • a very popular performance by the high school rock band.
The afternoon was enjoyed by many parents and students and the owners of our school are looking forward to a much bigger event this year in our new facility.  We raised about $700 USD, which was donated to Education for Development, and more specifically, a special needs school in Vietnam!

First Annual Art for Action Canada - May 2011
Mackenzie King Public School - Kitchener, Ontario

Organized by Tami Martin

Parents and students had a lot of fun browsing through the gallery of amazing artwork! Parents were also able to give a donation for their child's artwork. The night included:
  • an art exhibition which showcased art work from students in junior kindergarten to grade 6.
  • an art sale of items such as plant pots, bookmarks, cards, stickers, and candy kabobs.
The evening was a great success and Tami hopes that she can bring Art for Action to whatever school she is at next year!  Mackenzie King A for A raised more than $750 which will be split between the Kitchener Anselma House and Free the Children Foundation.  Mackenzie King has committed to raising money to build a school in Kenya, so half of the money raised will go toward that.   Congratulations, Mackenzie King!

Second Annual Art for Action Vietnam - June 2011
Canadian International School - Ho Chi Minh City

Our second annual event in Vietnam, was nothing short of a success!  We were at our new facility, the Maple Leaf Centre, and the building was lit up with a true gallery feel on the night of June 9, 2011.  Our Art for Action evening has really developed since last year.  The evening included:
  • Musical performances by students in grades 6 - 10.
  • Drama performances by students in grade 9 and 10.
  • Dance performances by students in grade 5.
  • An art sale including bookmarks, cards, memo boards, bracelets and necklaces, reusable Art for Action bags, and Mandala sun-catchers.
  • Artwork on display made by students from JK - grade 10, including work made my the recycled art club, jewelry making club, and young artists club.
  • a booth set up by Education for Development (the recipient of all proceeds).
The evening was a big hit with parents and students alike.  Students were very proud to show off all of their hard work!  Though we aren't finished with sales yet, we have raised about $400 so far, with more work to be done this week, collecting donations and selling more goodies like memo boards and bookmarks.  Though I am moving out of Vietnam this year, I hope that Art for Action will continue to grow and improve as well as continuing to support Education for Development.  Way to go, CIS!
